Environmental Policy

At Electric Radiators Direct, we take our environmental obligations very seriously. As is required by law, we fully comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

What is the WEEE directive?

The WEEE Directive ensures that producers of electrical equipment pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electronic goods. The United Kingdom currently collects and recycles more than 500,000 tonnes of WEEE, and Electric Radiators Direct plays its part in funding this disposal.

Under WEEE Regulations, households have 2 options for disposal of waste electrical products at end of life:

  • Option 1: Dispose of household WEEE at a local civic amenity site
  • Option 2: We offer every customer a free take-back service of their old electrical goods on a like-for-like basis. Please speak to our Sales team for more details on how to dispose of your Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

Why is it important to recycle household electricals?

Consumer electronics are part of our day-to-day lives, and we rely on them for just about everything – from switching the kettle on for our morning cup of tea, to our smartphones that connect us to the world at large. When you consider how many electricals are in a single household, it’s easy to see why recycling them is so important.

Electronics shouldn’t be disposed of with regular household waste, and here are the main reasons why:

  • Electricals often contain hazardous materials, like copper or palladium, which are poisonous to the environment.
  • If they’re sent to landfill with general waste, they can pollute the surrounding area and the habitats of animals.
  • Responsible recycling prevents hazardous materials from entering the food chain and eventually ending up in our bodies.
  • Many materials inside electricals, like gold and silver, can be reused again and helps sustainability.
  • Some electricals that are thrown away can be refurbished and reused by local councils and charitable organisations. By properly disposing of your electronics, you can help your local community.

Is electric heating energy efficient?

As the amount of energy generated through renewables increases, electric heating is only going to become cleaner, greener and more sustainable over time. It’s a futureproofed heating solution and one that’s going to rise in popularity as we work toward meeting carbon emissions targets for 2050.

It’s imperative that we decrease our reliance on fossil fuels in all forms of home heating and electric is leading the way. When paired with a green energy tariff, or self-generated green energy (e.g. via a home wind turbine or solar PV), electric heating is completely carbon neutral from start-to-finish.
