EDF and Imperial College London offer energy saving trial.

1000 customers have been selected for the trial introduced by EDF and Imperial College London in a bid to adapt energy usage and save money. The trial is set to last a year and will request the selected few to adapt the way they use both the washing machine and dryer during the less expensive periods of the day.

How will they know when this is? They will be informed via text message or alert advising them of the times when energy is greener.

The Governments 'Green deal' offer

The Government has launched a new scheme called the ‘Green Deal’, this has been set up to help households across the country deal with the ever rising cost of energy bills.

The scheme offers loans for homeowners so they can pay for an upgrade on boilers, insulation, or other energy saving devices such as electric radiators.

With words like ‘fuel poverty’ appearing more and more in the news, this scheme is offering households more options to save on their heating bills.

For example by using energy saving radiators, you can set the thermostats hour by hour to heat the rooms you reqiure, eliminating wasted heat and making a direct saving on your electricity bill.

Although there is a risk consumers could end up paying more than the potential saving, figures released suggest homeowners will save up to an estimated £50 per quarter.

How it works.

  • The household will be visited by an assessor who will ask you about your current energy consumption and look at potential requirements
  • Green deal installers will then be advised on potential improvements e.g. insulation, double glazing or electric radiators in some rooms.
  • The property owner will then require a loan between £1000 - £10,000 through the Green Deal Finance Company
  • The loan will be paid back though the energy bill over a period of 25 years.
  • The loans will be repaid at an interest rate of 6.92% (which is more than the standard loan rate).
  • The homeowner will also be required to pay a £63 set up charge and a £20 a year annual fee.
